I have considered adding a lift - psychologically I can't. I have this fear of it failing and dropping the car on me so doubt I will ever have one.

Interesting, something I'd never thought about- I guess I'm just more willing to trust the safety pins. ;)

So you feel safer under jack stands than under a lift.....? Am I understanding this right?

I will have a lift in my garage someday... Unfortunately installing the lift would be the least expensive part of the project. Rebuilding and expanding the garage from a 1 "car" carriage house to a full 2 car garage is the expensive part ;).
Personally I feel safer under a lift than jack stands -- also after having worked in shops in a former life, there's really no going back.

I would love to have a lift. But, my garage has a fairly low ceiling so it's a no-go. I worked in a service station for a couple of years so I feel at home under a car on a lift.
