2001 miata clicking noise

I have already replaced the belts a couple months ago, stopped the dreaded squeeking when its cold but now it has started a tapping/clicking noise that only happens when it is accelerating, if i put it in neutral it stops. Lately it happens more than it doesnt. could it be the timing belt or trani? only happened in first gear at three weeks ago...now in any gear when acceleration. It is an automatic.

the problem was the u joints in this rear wheel drive were fried and unfort. the driveshaft for it is a throw away. the dealer wanted over 6 bills but i got a drivetrain company to build me a new one so next time i can change out the u joints instead of replacing the whole thing for $500.

no more clicking and it could have cost a fortune if it went out while i was driving it....:D
