View Full Version : How do we get people to post here instead of in the Miata.net thread?

Lets face it - the thread on the Miata.net forum is not a registry. Its a discussion thread. It is not designed to look anything up, and no one is ever likely to peruse the thread to find a particular car or owner. Its a complete waste of disk space.

Yet for some inexplicable reason, people will post their VIN over there, and not in this registry that has been designed for that very purpose.

Anyone have a suggestion on how to handle this? Should we close the thread and insist that people come here?

Closing the other thread is about the only real, viable option.

I agree, closing the other thread is probably the only way!

No one seems to even be answering the poll in the other thread. I suspect no one really gives a rat's ass about that thread. People post in it because they can, then no one ever goes back to look at it. Its a waste of electrons.

I take it as further proof that any registries will simply become clearinghouses for people to post about what they have, and then will fall into disuse, disrepair and won't be regularly updated.

Yup. Registries are weird. Everyone wants one. But nobody wants one.

Everybody wants to post up and brag about what they have. Nobody wants to actually go through and edit for correctness. I'd be amused to see how many times a single car shows up in a registry after changing owners several times.

We have 26 registered in the brgse registry, I know that there are a lot more out their but its a good start. My point is "WHERE IS EVERYBODY?" I come here every night and I feel like I'm in a ghost town.

This was my point all along about registries. But so many people insisted that they're really important, so I set it up here. I'm particularly surprised at the '93 LE folks. They made a lot of noise about a registry, and only 2 people have bothered to do it.

I subscribe to Forever MX5 magazine. Here's a suggestion: contact them and suggest an article on miata websites / chat rooms / registries. Has anyone ever tried contacting them (either on this site or the forum)? I'm willing to try provided someone else has already tried and got a negative response, or someone has a good reason for me not to.

Forever MX5 already lists Miata.net as the online Miata community. We consider them a partner.

Last issue of the magazine included the list of various miatae and their numbers, sort of an article on collectibility/rarity...not that any M's will be collectors...Jeff's comments about the 91 BRGSE were that this car is currently the most sought after model. I sure did not realize that. As a follow up to that article, it would a segue to an article on the miata chat, info and registry web sites that you have suggested. I think agree that this would be a place that the registry can be more widely known, as well as the 1993 LE Registry and I would love to have an M registry or a Laguna Registry. The Ms have a thread or two in Miata.net and that is good but a dedicated spot would be interesting and helpful.

In addition to that article, perhaps we who are "registry-erd" could comment more often on miata.net about this registry and discussion area.

The discussion area is a duplicate of the NA forum of miata.net and I am not sure we need that part of the registry. There is such a wealth of knowledge in dot net forums on our cars. But I believe it is very cool and an interesting resource to have the registeries.
When we had the Laguna I looked for a registry but found it inactive.

Also, there is the fall gathering of BRG folks, a place to let this registry be known.

Excellent idea. I think that would help.

Not to hijack the BRG thread -- I've cross-posted from the '97 M registry -- but there seems to be a bit more activity over here. Anyway:

While I tried -- and am still trying -- to get the ball rolling for the '97 M-Edition, what Gary said on the BRG thread regarding general interest in registries is likely true. I actually thought that there might actually be an interest for the last of the M-Editions. After the registry was "constructed" courtesy of Gary, I even started a separate thread in the NA section of Miata.net forum to link to MazdaChat to help get the word out. Sadly, the result is 7 (out of 3000), counting my own, plus a couple of newbies that are interested, but as yet haven't registered. I certainly can't speak for the BRGs, the LEs, or the Rs in terms of numbers on the forums, but I do know of at least another 15 '97s that are regular users of the forum (including a vendor) who haven't joined. But I keep hoping.

My two cents on registries: It's an issue of achieving critical mass.

As far as the likely success of any given Miata registry, I think the '91 SE has the best chance because:

1. It's the first limited production model.
2. There's 4000 of them in the US, and I think having 400 (10%) is achievable and can be considered a "success".
3. It's currently "the most sought after model"(?) and is likely to continue to be so.

That said, there needs to be some check logic on the VIN's here because some of them are missing or incorrect. This makes it difficult for a subsequent owner to search their VIN to see if their car has been previously registered... which I think defeats the purpose of having a registry to begin with.

Personally, I believe the '91 SE registry would be better served at a dedicated website where it can be presented in a more visually appealing, organized and engaging fashion and only cross-promoted in the forums. I think by hosting it here, it kinda gets lost in the humdrum and loses it's potential for exclusivity.

But I've been wrong before...

I think just the fact that you replied to a post that's almost a year old should make it pretty obvious that the level of interest for registries is somewhere near zero. :)
