Initially, in most of the world, the car was designated as the MX5, while in North America the word Miata was added. In Japan, however, the car was known only as the Eunos Roadster, Eunos being a marketing arm of Mazda in Japan (similar to Honda - Acura or Toyota - Lexus). In July, 1990 , Mazda began selling a version of the Eunos Roadster called the V Special. It was available in BRG or Brilliant Black and was equipped as follows:
- MSRP about $15,750 (U.S. dollars)
- Right Hand Drive
- Tan Leather interior
- CD player
- Nardi Wooden Steering Wheel
- Nardi Wooden Shift Knob
- Wooden Brake Grip
- Alloy wheels
- Power windows
Available options included air-conditioning, Limited Slip Differential, chrome door mirrors, polished scuff plates, fog lamps and automatic transmission.
This version was available through to mid-1993 when the V Special II was introduced. The V Spec II had the 1.8 litre engine, polished 7 spoke alloy wheels, upgraded sound system, tan top and a third colour, Chaste White.
Many used Eunos Roadsters have been imported into the UK (mainly due to the RHD compatibility) and the V Special has its own group of enthusiastic owners.
